Scarlett Rants

As a great philosopher once said: OMFG!

2019 was a year with plenty of frustration for Shameless Book Deals, with first getting hacked and then massive problems with our webhost.

In September, not all that long after we had our site cleaned from the hack, our webhost helpfully decided to upgrade the virtual server that Shameless Book Deals and our sister sites were hosted on.  Well… that didn’t go so smoothly.  All of a sudden, the software that we’d been using for years with no issues up and decided it wasn’t going to work anymore.  Of course, according to our webhost, this was nothing to do with the server changes and was completely my problem.

We eventually got it mostly working, but there were some persistent issues such as FORMS not working on the website.  Kind of important when all the information for the books people request us to promote comes in through forms.  And also the ‘contact us’ form, that people tried to use when reporting to us that the book promotion form wasn’t working.  Fun, fun, fun.  Every day was a new adventure as the new virtual server found a new way to bend me over and violate me.

Finally… I had enough and went on the hunt for a new webhost.  One that didn’t suck ass.  I narrowed it down to a few and then picked one.  I blocked out a week of promotions so that the newsletter wouldn’t go out in the middle of this transfer and when the allotted time came, I went for it.

A few days into this process, the webhost I had picked notified me that my sites were not acceptable to be hosted on their servers.  I wish they had have told me that when I god damned well asked about that very thing before paying them and wasting over half the time we’d allocated for the transfer.

So now, with time of the essence, I went with my next pick for webhost.  I must say that every interaction I’ve had with the new webhost so far has been an absolute pleasure, they’ve been efficient and knowledgeable.  I’ve been especially impressed with their 24/7 availability after getting so used to “I’ve messed up your site, but it’s Friday night, so sucks to be you until Monday” for the last few years.

Once we transferred the sites to the new webhost, the vast majority of the issues just miraculously evaporated.  That was a huge relief.

Not all the issues though.  The longest standing problem was incorrect information being shown on confirmation pages after people entered their book details for a promotion request.  We simply couldn’t track that one down for the life of us.  The moderation and scheduling on the back end was a slightly more convoluted process, but I was at least able to accept promotion requests and format/schedule them properly for the newsletter.

While working on these minor but embarrassing and tenacious glitches, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows either.  We actually got hacked…. AGAIN.

However, this time was different.  Between the expert response via my upgraded security software plan (so fast it made me dizzy) and the new webhost now taking daily backups of all sites above and beyond the backups I was doing anyway, there was virtually no downtime and little impact on site users.  Best guess on this one is that in the transfer over to the new webhost, the option to automatically keep all plugins updated as soon as updates are available had been switched off, so that introduced a vulnerability that has now been remedied.

Here’s the good news…

Mid-January, my software developer sent a fix for the last remaining bugs and it worked!  After monitoring submissions and the site in general for the past couple weeks, we invited our Head Salmon back to resume their moderation and scheduling duties!  The process was just that little bit too weird over the last few months to have the salmon in charge, with a bunch of questions coming in about the glitches as well, so I had been handling it all myself while the bugs persisted.

This is a great thing that will not only free up my time again, but is also a good thing for the subscribers, as one of the Salmon’s duties is to make sure to find a suitable free book for the newsletter if none have been scheduled on any given day, which brings more eyes to the newsletter, which brings more eyes to all the other books in there.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I think this is a cause to celebrate so I will shortly be posting the details of what I’m going to be calling the “2020 – Year of the Salmon” promotion.  Watch this space!
