If there’s one thing I love, it’s being incredibly busy and then having an unexpected hassle dropped on my lap. I’m sure you all feel the same!
I had been with my email service provider (ESP) for roughly a decade, because in the early days of Shameless Book Deals, the ESPs who had the features I required to interact with the back end of my site to help build the newsletters were few and far between. I settled on one that had a great responsive support team and the features I needed even though their interface was a throwback to the 1990s internet, convoluted and unintuitive. That wasn’t such a problem once everything was set up, and if something went weird, like I said, the support team was great.
That all changed a few months ago. Weird glitches were happening, and the support replies I was getting were suddenly obviously AI generated, fixating on incorrect details and hallucinating nonsensical stuff. That was bad, but what was worse was when the support responses stopped altogether.
That absolutely freaked me out and made me feel like something very serious was happening under the surface. It made me feel like there was suddenly a real possibility that I might wake up one day and my ESP wouldn’t exist anymore, leaving me high and dry, with all these promotions booked and no way to send them.
I desperately tried to contact support… nothing. So I was left with no choice but to back up everything I could locally, and begin my hunt for a replacement ESP while the current one was at least working. I figured that in ten years or so, the features I wanted might have become more ubiquitous.
Finding a Home for Smutslinging Ain’t Easy
Well, I was wrong there. I searched high and low, reading feature sets and FAQs, and directly contacting well over a dozen ESPs and found that the features I needed were still vanishingly rare, and perhaps even worse was that an erotica-based newsletter was not welcome at several ESPs. It seemed somehow more unwelcome than a decade ago even with a long history and a publicly defined content policy like mine.
I also had to deal with AI support bots that would hallucinate whatever it took to get you to sign up to a service. This sent me on a couple wild goose chases when I got further into onboarding processes and a human looked at the content and pulled the pin on the whole thing. At the other end of the scale were ESPs where I couldn’t figure out how to contact them without already having an account, or where they still have not responded to this very day weeks/months later.
I don’t want to use this post to trash talk the various ESPs for their business decisions. It is their right to have their own content policies, though all the uphill battles one faces as an erotica content producer can start to feel personal. I understand the appeal of an AI support bot for instant customer responses, though the hallucinations were sometimes insane I have to admit that a lot of the time it was quick, efficient and accurate.
I thought perhaps more useful would be to tell you about two email service providers that left me feeling good about the interactions I had with them. One of them I migrated to, the other I did not.
Email Octopus is a well-established ESP with lots of glowing reviews. I cannot comment on their UI, deliverability and ongoing support as I did not end up migrating to them, but I will say that their pre-sales support was superb. Their response to my queries were friendly and thorough, answering everything I needed, including the important question of whether erotica was acceptable:
“When it comes to content, we don’t prohibit erotica, but when it comes to adult content in general, we don’t allow sending pornographic content in emails, so no explicit photos, but censored or blurred covers are absolutely fine. Since you’re promoting books that are on mainstream stores, this shouldn’t be an issue.”
As far as pricing was concerned, Email Octopus came in very competitively, and their free tier appears generous too… but the pricing was not quite as good for me when you factor in that Shameless is a daily deals newsletter. Their tiers limit you to sending 10x your subscriber count per month, not the >30x I needed. I would have had to pay for a much higher tier than my actual subscriber level would otherwise require. Unfortunately, they also did not have the functionality I needed once we did some digging.
Buttondown is a comparatively new ESP founded in 2017 with a smaller team. The pre-sales response I got from them was also top-notch: thorough, friendly and personal.
Out of everybody, they gave me by far the most confidence that promoting erotica with them wouldn’t be like living with the sword of Damocles hanging over my head:
Adult content and erotica is definitely permitted, so that shouldn’t be an issue. The only time it may cause trouble is if you were hoping to add a Paid tier to your newsletter. These transactions would be processed by Stripe who has their own terms of service. But for just sending a free newsletter, you’re all good. They also had the functionality that I needed to make the newsletter work… but then things got even better. They have one of the most comprehensive APIs (Application Programming Interface, a standardised way to interact with their systems programmatically) out of all the ESPs I’d been looking into. The more I read their documentation, the more I thought that doing it that way would be better.
It was going to be a bit of work on my end to change how the newsletters are constructed and scheduled, but I thought it would be worth it as I could see in the long run opportunities to make the newsletter even better after I’d got the basic migration out of the way.
So that’s what I’ve been doing, my fellow smutslingers, and Buttondown support has been fantastic all the way. I will admit that there have been some bugs to iron out on their end, I think the complexity of the Shameless Book Deals newsletter combined with the api interactivity exposed a few things that I think had slipped under the radar for them, but like I said, the support has been great. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when a real person answers.
One downside I would say is the email creator inside their UI. It’s pretty basic, there’s no fancy dragging and dropping of various content blocks. It does the basics for formatting, you can get images in, and the sky is the limit if you have some way of constructing the raw HTML/CSS yourself. It isn’t a huge downside to me for Shameless Book Deals, Bad Boy Romance and The Sweetest Romance because I construct the emails externally, but it’s something I’m going to have to work around for my pen name emails when I migrate them from my other ESP (completely separate from where SBD, BBR and TSR were running from, so not putting the fear of disappearing into me at this point).
Pricing is competitive in the paid tiers… I would like to see them bump up the limit on their free tier as that 100 subscriber level is hit pretty quick, but it does at least give you the opportunity to test out their interface. Now that I’ve been with them for a few weeks and have some tentative stats to look at, deliverability seems marginally better than where I was before, which is a big relief as that’s not something I felt I could easily test ahead of time.
So that’s the unexpected journey I’ve been on. It wasn’t a journey I wanted to go on, but since it had to happen, I’m happy with where I ended up and I am excited to use the new functionality available to me to make Shameless Book Deals even better for everybody.
